Sometimes it really is too late

The optometrist has advised I will be needing cataract surgery. But in the meantime I've got a new pair of lenses for my glasses. At Dr. Mortensen's office I thought I might give soft contacts a try. My odd size/prescription trial lenses came in and today I tried to learn the fine art of popping them in and out. It's not really a simple affair as it used to be with my old, hard lenses. They're made of a weird substance that likes to fold itself up and turn itself inside out. If my eyes can tolerate them, maybe I'll order some.

But wait a minute. . . I am looking into the mirror for the first time in many years without looking through glasses. What is it that strikes me the most? What are those pouches under my eyes? I don't remember them when I last wore contacts. Why didn't I get contacts when I was younger? When I didn't have those pouchy, wrinkly things under my eyes? Am I to be the first person who switches to contacts and looks OLDER? Maybe it's too late for contacts. Maybe I look better with the old glasses on.

How much does an eye job cost?
